The formula

How the dose is calculated

This calculator uses the two standard formulas recommended by diabetes care teams worldwide:

Dose formulas
Meal dose = Carbs (g) ÷ ICR
Correction = (Current BG − Target) ÷ ISF
Total = Meal dose + Correction

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Divide the total grams of carbohydrates by your ICR. Example: 60g ÷ ICR 15 = 4 units of meal insulin. This calculator does it instantly and adds any correction dose needed.

Extra insulin to bring high blood sugar back to target. Formula: (Current BG − Target) ÷ ISF. If you are already at target, the correction dose is zero.

The ICR tells you how many grams of carbs one unit of insulin covers. ICR 15 = 1 unit covers 15g. It is set by your doctor and may differ at different times of day.

The ISF tells you how much one unit of insulin lowers your blood sugar. ISF 50 mg/dL = 1 unit drops BG by 50. It is specific to you and set by your diabetes care team.

No. Below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) treat hypoglycemia immediately with fast-acting carbs. Do NOT take insulin. The calculator will show a critical danger alert if you enter a low blood sugar.

Primarily designed for type 1 or insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes on basal-bolus therapy. If you use fixed doses or oral medication only, this calculator does not apply.
