Frequently asked questions

Can type 2 diabetes be prevented? +
Yes. The landmark Diabetes Prevention Program showed that losing 5–7% of body weight and exercising 150 minutes per week reduced type 2 diabetes risk by 58% in people with pre-diabetes. Early lifestyle intervention is the most effective prevention strategy.
What blood sugar level is considered pre-diabetes? +
Pre-diabetes is defined as fasting blood glucose of 100–125 mg/dL (5.6–6.9 mmol/L) or HbA1c of 5.7–6.4%. An OGTT result of 140–199 mg/dL at 2 hours also indicates pre-diabetes. Without intervention, many people with pre-diabetes develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years.
What BMI increases the risk of type 2 diabetes? +
A BMI of 25+ (overweight) increases type 2 diabetes risk. For South Asian, East Asian and Middle Eastern/North African populations, risk increases at BMI 23+. Waist circumference is also important: above 94cm for men and 80cm for women indicates increased risk.
