Frequently asked questions

What is an insulin-to-carb ratio (ICR)? +
The ICR tells you how many grams of carbohydrate are covered by 1 unit of insulin. For example, an ICR of 1:10 means 1 unit covers 10g of carbs. Your ICR is set by your diabetes care team and may vary by time of day.
What is the difference between basal and bolus insulin? +
Basal insulin is a long-acting insulin taken once or twice daily to keep blood sugar stable between meals and overnight. Bolus insulin is a rapid-acting insulin taken before meals to cover the carbohydrates in each meal.
How do I calculate my insulin dose for a meal? +
Meal insulin = carbs in meal ÷ ICR + correction dose. For example: 60g carbs, ICR 1:10, blood sugar 180 mg/dL, target 120, correction factor 50: dose = 6 + (180-120)/50 = 6 + 1.2 = 7.2 units. Always confirm with your diabetes team.
