Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my blood sugar is low? +
Apply the 15-15 rule: eat or drink 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates (fruit juice, glucose tablets, regular soda), wait 15 minutes, then recheck. If still below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L), repeat. If unconscious or unable to swallow, use glucagon and call emergency services immediately.
What is a dangerous blood sugar level? +
Below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) is hypoglycaemia — treat immediately. Below 54 mg/dL (3.0 mmol/L) is clinically significant low. Above 300 mg/dL (16.7 mmol/L) requires urgent attention. If DKA symptoms are present (nausea, fruity breath, vomiting), call emergency services.
When should I call emergency services for diabetes? +
Call emergency services immediately if: the person is unconscious or cannot be woken up, has a seizure, cannot swallow safely, blood sugar is below 40 mg/dL or above 400 mg/dL, or symptoms of DKA are present (vomiting, fruity breath, rapid breathing, confusion).
